Parejos and Figurados: How a Cigar’s Shape Influences the Experience

When beginning their journey through the cigar world, many lovers focus their attention on the origin of the tobacco, the intensity of the blend or the brand chosen.

Generally, cigars are classified into two large families: Pairs and Figures. Pairs are straight and cylindrical models with a uniform body from start to finish.

The Figures have different shapes, with their heads pointed, their feet narrower, or variations at both ends.

In addition to the visual aspect, the construction directly influences the tasting. In Figures, the head’s tuning can concentrate the aromas and modify the perception of flavors throughout the smoking experience.

The Pairs, in turn, usually offer a more predictable and balanced experience, allowing the blend to express itself consistently throughout the tasting.

Historically, the Figures were quite common in 19th- and early 20th-century manufacturing. With the growth of industrial production, the Pairs gained space due to the increased practicality of manufacture.

More than an aesthetic issue, the shape of the cigar represents an important tool for exploring different nuances of handmade tobacco.
